Charley's Grilled SubsAbout the CheeseSteak:
Originated in the 1920's by Italian immigrants living in South Philadelphia. Often called "steak hoagies", the CheeseSteak was prepared with thinly sliced steak, sauteed with grilled onions, topped with provolone cheese, and served on an Italian roll.
A Wrong Turn:
On the way to NYC during a family vacation, Charley took a wrong exit and landed in South Philly where he enjoyed his first CheeseSteak. Totally hooked, he took his findings back home and began cooking CheeseSteaks for his friends.
A Loan from Mom:
In 1986, Charley, a junior at The Ohio State University, borrowed his Mom's life savings and opened his first restaurant. The tiny, 16-seat eatery featuring fresh grilled subs, fries, and lemonade was an instant hit.
